This topic moves beyond the individual user and asks: How do digital systems affect the health and quality of life for all people across the planet? Since this is an HL extension, we focus heavily on analyzing specific challenges and evaluating potential interventions.

I. Understanding Global Well-being in a Digital Context
Defining Well-being
Well-being is often defined as a state where individuals realize their own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and are able to make a contribution to their community. When we add the "digital" layer, we examine how technology enhances or degrades these fundamental human states.
Global Well-being (GWB) covers three main dimensions:
- Mental/Cognitive Well-being: Focuses on psychological health, attention span, decision-making, and stress levels.

Dark Patterns are deceptive interface designs used to trick users into making unintended decisions (e.g., making it very difficult to cancel a subscription). Interventions involve regulating or banning these practices to restore user agency and reduce user frustration/anxiety.
3. Opt-in vs. Opt-out Defaults

As HL students, you must evaluate the success of these interventions:
1. The Challenge of Scalability:
Can a successful intervention in one cultural context (Context: Cultural) be effectively applied globally? Example: Content moderation standards that work in the EU might conflict with free speech values in the US.
2. Resistance from Platforms:
Interventions often threaten the core business models (based on attention and data) of major platforms. Companies may find ways to bypass regulations (e.g., replacing banned dark patterns with subtle, equally manipulative "grey patterns").
3. The Nanny State Concern:
When governments regulate digital use (e.g., banning certain apps or limiting screen time), critics argue this encroaches on individual freedom and creates a Nanny State—a government that is too intrusive in personal choices.
4. The Role of AI in Intervention:
Can the same technology that creates the challenge (AI for addictive engagement) be used as the solution (AI for identifying and filtering harmful content)? This raises ethical questions about delegating societal well-being to automated systems.
